Design and life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>EXTENDED UNTIL JUNE 28<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Francisca Rius i Sanuy<\/strong> (Barcelona, \u200b\u200b1891-1967), artist and woman, was one of many who had to navigate, and survive, in an era and environment that was not very favorable for female professional development. Her incipient artistic career showed a special sensitivity and technical and conceptual skill, and her early work seemed destined to excel in graphic design. But, first, her family and social environment limited her aspirations. And then the Spanish Civil War and subsequent political circumstances brought her professional and artistic career to an abrupt end.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have a limited legacy of his work, carefully preserved within the family circle. Of his life, and especially of a fragment of it, we preserve a unique document, a diary written during the Civil War, addressed to his son, and which, published 70 years later, is a unique testimony of those times. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2009, small recognitions have been happening. First with the editions of the <em>Diari \u00edntim<\/em> which will lead to references in other publications or even television programs. But above all thanks to the growing interest in the role of women in our society and the new perspectives of art historiography.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Girona Art Museum has made a decisive contribution, presenting work by Francisca Rius in the exhibition \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/museuart.cat\/exposicions\/feresa-de-silenci-les-artistes-a-la-revista-feminal-1907-1917\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Feresa de Silenci. The artists in <em>Feminal<\/em> magazine, 1907-1917 <\/a>\u201d of the year 2022 and which now presents this solo exhibition dedicated to the artist.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An exhibition that aims to make public the vital and creative trajectory of Francisca Rius, to highlight the interest of her work, but also to make clear how difficult it was for a woman, at the beginning of the 20th century, to become an art professional. And how silenced her works, her voices and her lives ended up being. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biography<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Francisca Rius i Sanuy (Barcelona, \u200b\u200b1891 \u2013 1967)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Francisca Rius i Sanuy was a draughtsman and painter of the first third of the 20th century. She was born in the city of Barcelona, \u200b\u200bon December 11, 1891. She was a student at the Escola de Llotja, between 1907 and 1914, obtaining several prizes and diplomas each year, in addition to the Silver Medal, awarded by the Provincial Academy of Fine Arts, in 1914.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He competed in the exhibition of <em>Portraits and Drawings, ancient and modern<\/em> , which took place at the Palau de Belles Arts in Barcelona (1910), with the painting entitled <em>Carrer de l&#8217;Arc de Sant Francesc<\/em> . In 1911 he took part in the <em>Exposici\u00f3n Nacional de Artes Decorativas<\/em> held in Madrid; and in 1913 he participated again where he obtained an Honorable Mention for his varied and interesting notes and artistic compositions. And in 1914 he won the extraordinary prize, of 500 pesetas, that the Barcelona City Council granted to students of the Escola de Llotja.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1914 she took part in the first edition of the Summer School of the Pedagogical Research Council of the Provincial Council of Barcelona, \u200b\u200bdirected by Eladi Homs, as a teacher in the specialty of \u201cApplication of drawing to ornamentation and stylization\u201d. That same year, the magazine <em>Feminal<\/em> dedicated a monographic report to her entitled \u201cA meritorious artist\u201d which highlighted her art of stylization. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During these same dates, she also took artistic direction of the works of the Patronat d&#8217;Obreres de l&#8217;Agulla, founded by the writer Dolors Monserd\u00e0, as well as those of La Llar (Women&#8217;s School and Residence for Students), directed by Carme Karr, carrying out numerous decorative and ornamental works applied to textile work within her specialty.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1916 she married Josep Ribot i Calpe, also a cartoonist and illustrator. In the following years she had six children, of whom only four would survive. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 1920s, she joined the Institute of Culture and Popular Library for Women as a teacher, founded and directed by Francesca Bonnemaison, where she worked until 1936. During the war, she continued working at the same center, but now managed by the Generalitat de Catalunya and under the name of the Professional School for Women, where she taught until January 1939. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Civil War, following the mobilization of his son, he wrote a diary about daily life in the rear, where he describes the day-to-day life of his family and Barcelona society in general. The end of the Civil War, in 1939, meant the truncation of his artistic and professional career.
