Sixteenth-century painting in Girona is largely represented by foreign artists who incorporated Renaissance elements into the Flemish Gothic tradition.
Some of these artists include Perris de Fontaines and Joan de Borgonya, authors of the altarpiece of Sant Feliu de Girona, begun in 1504 and completed in 1520.
Prints and engravings helped to disseminate new models of representation that were soon reflected in Catalan painting. Under their influence, the work of Pere Mates developed, a painter from Girona and one of the most prolific of his time, of whom the Museum preserves the most important group of works by the artist in Catalonia.
