The Museum presents a collection of early medieval art that reflects the artistic evolution of Catalonia during the comital period.
The works from this period are marked by their religious character: liturgical furnishings, sculpture and monumental decoration, produced mainly in monasteries and cathedral centres. These spaces were, for centuries, the main hubs of artistic creation in the Pyrenean and pre-Pyrenean counties; those located in the northeast were part of the Diocese of Girona.
Among the most outstanding pieces are the liturgical ensemble from Sant Pere de Rodes, the Beam of Cruïlles and the marble head attributed to the workshop of the Master of Cabestany.
Finally, visitors can discover one of the most recognisable and enigmatic symbols of present-day Girona: the original column with the relief of the Lioness, dated to the 13th century.
