Access

The first part of the main entrance (as far as the courtyard) is by a staircase, then there is an outdoor lift that goes to the lobby on level 1. Wheelchair access is through a secondary entrance in C/ Pere Rocabertí. It is important to warn staff attending to the public beforehand (tel. 972 20 38 34 or via email: museuart_girona.cultura@gencat.cat). It is advisable to inform them of your visit ahead of time.

There is an accessible toilet on level 1, next to the rest room. Ask for a key at the public attention point.

Getting around in the museum

Permanent collection

The Museum of Art is located in the former Episcopal Palace. The permanent collection occupies 5 floors, with a total of 18 rooms. 72% of the 1,300 m2 it covers is accessible to wheelchairs. The areas that can only be reached by stairs are the Prison and the monographic rooms.

 

Temporary exhibition

Area 3. The rooms in this section are located on level 2, level 3 and part of level 4.

Level 2: room 3.1 can be accessed using the lift from the lobby on level 1, rooms 3.2 and 3.3 accessed by the stairs with 3 and 4 steps.

Level 3: reached by two flights of stairs with 8 steps each.

Level 4- look-out point : reached by two flights of stairs with 8 steps each.

 

Area 2. The 2 rooms in this section are located on level 5. Reached by a staircase or a lift from level 1.

 

Entrance ways and corridors

All doors and corridors are at least 80 cm wide. The route has turning places where it is possible to do a circle of 150 cms in diameter.

Tactile objects and information in Braille

There is a tactile route through the permanent collection, offering a selection of objects from different periods, artistic styles and materials. Each one has an explanation in braille. They can be found in rooms 5, 9, 12 and in room m2 (monographic area). In room 5 there is a table for typhlological experimentation on Romanesque stone sculptures. Various original objects are on display along with braille notes.

The lift buttons are numbered, in braille and in high relief.

Lighting

All the areas are well lit and the walls contrast with the floor. However in room 3b and in one area of room 5, there is less lighting so as to protect the books on display. There is a sign to explain the situation.

Another place which is dimly lit is the Prison on level 4.

Signs

The route through the museum is backed up by signs which show the way to go. Furthermore a series of pictograms indicate the use and services of the different spaces.

At the information desk you can get a plan in axonometric perspective and colour-coded to correspond with the signs showing the room’s number. This plan also shows a route which takes in the most representative works.

Environmental noise

  • The museum is located next to the Cathedral. In the outdoor areas one can hear the bells ringing occasionally.
  • In the rest area on level 1 there is a coffee machine that buzzes continuously.

Smells

  • The coffee machine in the rest area on level 1 imbues the room with the aroma of coffee.
  • Occasionally there may be some restoration work going on in one of the rooms involving the use of chemicals. Ask the staff beforehand if you are concerned about this.

  • There may be sudden changes in temperature and humidity between the different areas of the Museum.
  • During the summer months some of the rooms in the Museum will reach high temperatures. At the information desk you may borrow a fan.
