Art and science: forgeries in the Museum

Microscopi

Presentation

The Girona Art Museum has found two identical works in its warehouses and is looking for promising young restoration artists to find out which of the two paintings is a forgery. Apparently, the forger is a great expert at deceiving museums and not even the most trained eyes are able to tell which work is authentic and which is not. Through real scientific experiments, the enigmas presented by the case will be answered and, with a lot of luck, this mystery of forgers in the Museum will be solved.

Objectives

  • Learn about the work carried out by the Museum's restoration and conservation professionals.
  • Establish links between art and science based on a practical case study.
  • Work on different scientific processes based on real cases to analyze technical aspects of works of art.
  • Scientific method.

Description

“Art and Science: Forgeries in the Museum” aims to show a different side of the Girona Art Museum and bring together two aspects of knowledge: art and science.

Generally, what we see when we go to the Museum are its rooms and the works on display. This time we want to invite educational centers to get to know the Museum from the inside and discover professions that often go unnoticed, but which become fundamental in order to be able to carry out the tasks of a museum: restoration and conservation.

With this backdrop, “Art and Science: Forgeries in the Museum” invites students to solve the tangle of the forgery case affecting the Girona Art Museum. The Museum has two identical works: which one is authentic? Based on a real case, students will use microscopes, pigment samples and X-ray supports and reproductions.

Ultimately, they will have to carry out work processes like true restoration professionals and, through scientific analysis, they will manage to solve the case.
