The Girona Art Museum presents, for the first time, a selection of works, paintings, photographs and texts that testify to Santiago Rusiñol’s connection with the Girona region, and especially with Girona city.
The exhibition, which shows 26 paintings plus twenty drawings and photographs as well as documents and writings by Rusiñol, explores the artist’s Girona itineraries with the aim of tracing Santiago Rusiñol’s various stays in Girona.
Ripoll, Olot, Puigcerdà, and especially Girona and Arbúcies were the places in Girona most frequented by the artist, although not the only ones. Their landscapes and corners were painted in a good number of paintings and described in different articles and stories published in the press of the time. In all these places, where he stayed, Rusiñol left the mark of his affable nature and knew how to make friendships that last in memory and in popular anecdotes.
The exhibition at the Museu d’Art, the largest dedicated to the artist’s work in Girona, shows this close symbiosis between the art of painting and writing that Rusiñol knew how to alternate so well and presents the drawings and paintings accompanied by a selection of texts by the artist himself, in addition to graphic and documentary evidence of Rusiñol’s relationship with local artists and intellectuals.
The exhibition, produced by the Catalan Agency for Cultural Heritage, was curated by Margarida Casacuberta and Vinyet Panyella, as well as advised by Mercedes Palau-Ribes, and had more than 40 lenders including individuals, museums, archives and libraries.
