Restoration of two oil paintings by Jaume Pons Martí

Between 1873 and 1905, the painter Jaume Pons Martí produced two small oil paintings, which underwent a complete restoration. The project was carried out to stop the degradation of the works, which had become more pronounced in recent times. The interventions carried out focused on stabilizing the support, cleaning the surface and protecting the pictorial material.

The restoration was accompanied by a historiographical study that has helped to determine the chronology and find out the exact location of the elements represented. The study concludes that both paintings show a fragment of the disappeared wall of Girona, specifically the Porta de Figuerola, which formed the access to the Baluard of the same name, in the place where the Post Office building currently stands. The two canvases served the painter to represent the same architectural element from two opposite points of view: one from the perspective of someone entering the city and the other seen by someone leaving it.
