Regulations for copyists

Individuals interested in making a copy of a work from the Museum must request permission. To obtain authorization, they must submit the following documentation:

  • A letter addressed to the Museum Directorate. It must include an introduction, the motivation and a brief CV. It must also state the expected duration of the activity and the intended use of the reproduction.
  • List of materials to be used.
  • Photocopy of ID.
  • Entry and exit must be through the Museum’s main entrance. Copyists must identify themselves to security staff.
  • Each copyist must bring their own materials and may only have them in the gallery while copying. All other personal belongings, bags and coats must be left at the cloakroom.
  • The easel is provided by the Museum.
  • Floor protection must be provided by each copyist. They must bring a protective covering such as oilcloth or paper, with a maximum size of 150 cm, and place it under the easel.
  • No type of dust may be generated, and brushes may not be cleaned in the Museum.
  • The format of the authorized copy must always be either smaller or larger than the original work by at least five centimetres on each side. The maximum working size in the galleries is 120 cm.
  • Copyists must respect the safety distance established by the Restoration Department. Their position must not obstruct the visibility of the work or the normal flow of Museum visitors.
  • Copyists must at all times follow the instructions of the Restoration Department, which will supervise attendance and the execution of the copy.
  • The Directorate may temporarily suspend work in exceptional cases such as institutional visits, openings, removal of exhibited works on loan, building works, etc. The copyist will be informed as far in advance as possible.
