The jury highlights the documentary research work of its curators Conxita Oliver and Joan Gil
The exhibition “Another art. Informalism in Catalonia 1956-1966 ” has been chosen as the winner in the Research category in the 40th edition of the ACCA Awards, the competition with which the Catalan Association of Art Critics (ACCA ) recognizes the work done in the world of art in Catalonia during 2023. The exhibition, curated by Conxita Oliver and Joan Gil, has been organized and produced by the Girona Art Museum.
The exhibition “Another art. Informalism in Catalonia 1956-1966” was inaugurated at the Girona Art Museum on October 27, and can be visited until June 30. Around this exhibition, several activities have been organized that allow us to delve deeper into the legacy of this very relevant movement.
“Another Art. Informalism in Catalonia 1956-1966” is notable for the extensive research work of its curators, which has served to critically explore the informalist movement, one of the most prominent currents in post-war art in Catalonia. A documentary and research work that can be seen in the exhibition rooms and which has been collected in an outstanding catalogue that includes all the documentation related to the movement and especially the selected works that participate in the exhibition.
The Girona Art Museum had already been nominated for the ACCA Awards in 2020, for the exhibition “Celso Lagar and Hortense Bégué. The Catalan Years 1 (1915-1918)”, also nominated in the Research category. On that occasion, the award was deserved by the book “Tosquelles. Curar les institucions”, by Joana Masó.
However, then as now, the nomination for a research award for the preliminary research and documentation work of an exhibition helps to understand the importance of the exhibition projects of many museums and institutions as promoters, also, of research in history, heritage and art.
In this 40th edition, thirty candidates competed in six categories – contemporary art curation, historical curation, spaces, artistic projects and initiatives, art criticism and research. The list of finalist candidates was drawn up with the support of a delegated committee, formed on this occasion by Ricard Bru, Marc Domènech, Gisela Chillida, Hiuwai Chu and Sílvia Muñoz d’Imbert. The choice of the awardees was carried out through the assembly vote of the ACCA members.
The winners were announced during the awards ceremony held this past Wednesday, March 20, in the Meier Auditorium of MACBA (Barcelona), with the attendance of a large audience.
