Romanesque and Gothic for Generation Z

Alumnes d'ESO al claustre

Presentation

In this visit, designed for teenagers, the most specific concepts of medieval art and history are brought closer to the reality of young people in the 21st century. We will learn how medieval architects and engineers managed to make very tall buildings with sophisticated construction systems and we will learn all the stylistic characteristics of Romanesque and Gothic through the observation of majesties and virgins, saints and altarpieces. Likewise, we will relate it to the current world to discover how these works from so many years ago still speak to us today.

Objectives

  • Know and differentiate the defining features of Romanesque and Gothic art.
  • Get closer to the historical and cultural context of medieval Catalonia.
  • Observe the evolution of Girona Cathedral and the construction process of a Gothic cathedral.
  • Learn to value cultural heritage and relate it to current events.

Description

This activity consists of a guided and participatory visit to the Romanesque and Gothic art collections of the Girona Art Museum and Girona Cathedral, where we will look at the most significant works of this period, unique in the history of Catalan art.

The objective of this activity is for students to actively participate in the visit, making them reflect on the relationships between medieval art and its more current environment.

To do this, resources will be used to link aspects of their daily lives (the use of social networks such as Instagram or Twitch, ways of communicating through images such as stickers, the world of fashion or TikTok challenges) with a selection of works that allow us to talk about iconography, style, history, stylistic characteristics or medieval architectural innovations.

The visit will be transformed into an experience in which students will be the protagonists, reflecting on the contemporary world and learning to value cultural heritage.
