19th century

The 19th century at the Museum of Art is presented through European artistic movements, first influenced by the academies and later by the more groundbreaking trends of the end of the century.

From academicism, represented in Catalonia by the Barcelona School of Drawing (Llotja), the narrative moves to Romanticism, with works such as Jacob Receives the Bloodstained Tunic of His Son Joseph by Pelegrí Clavé.

The break with this tradition came in the second half of the 19th century with pictorial Realism, born in France and introduced here by Ramon Martí i Alsina. From the northern French plein air movement emerged the Olot School of Landscape Painting, represented by works such as The Harvest, by Joaquim Vayreda.
