Discover the secrets of medieval books, a unique experience that will transport your students to the golden age of illuminated manuscripts, where each page was a work of art in itself. Immerse yourself in a fascinating adventure through the two most valuable illuminated manuscripts of the Diocese of Girona: the Beatus of Girona and the Martyrology of Usuard. A combined visit to the Museum of Art and the Cathedral of Girona to decipher the mysteries of medieval society, from social hierarchies to the revolutionary role of the nun in the creation of the famous Beatus.

Objectives

  • Learn about the cultural and historical value of medieval manuscripts, especially the Beatus of Girona and the Martyrology of Usuard, as witnesses to the society and art of the Middle Ages.
  • Understand the social and artistic context of the medieval era, through visits to emblematic spaces such as the Art Museum and the Cathedral of Girona.
  • Assess the role of prominent historical figures, such as the nun, in the production of manuscripts and their impact on contemporary society.
  • Promote cooperative work and experiential learning, through active participation in a fun and educational activity.

Description

“Little Copyists: The Magic of Medieval Manuscripts” is an activity designed for middle and upper primary school students (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades). This activity is divided into two distinct parts.

During the first half of the activity, we will explore the production process of medieval books, through audiovisual documents but also contemplating the Martyrology of Usuard, at the Museum of Art, and the Beatus of Girona, at the Treasure Museum of the Cathedral of Girona.

In the second part of the activity, it will be the turn of the Little Copyists, the objective of the workshop revolves around the creation of a classroom diary where the participants will elaborate the entire creative process. From preparing the diary support to writing it. They will prepare everything with ink of different colors and decorate the Capllets to continue the first sentence of their diary.

Finally, participants will be able to take the diary to school to continue writing about their day to day.
