The Girona Art Museum celebrates the 4th edition of Art-Acció!, a day to explore wood as a living material that preserves the traces and stories of generations. Workshops, demonstrations and guided tours will turn the Museum into an artistic space open to everyone.
Art-Acció! has become an annual event that invites visitors to explore materials, techniques and artistic procedures through creativity and active participation. After clay, fabric and paper, which welcomed more than a thousand participants , this year the protagonist is wood. The Art-Acció! conferences are an evolution of the Visitor’s Day, in which for more than 10 years participation was encouraged through a theme. This year, wood will serve as a premise to talk about identity and memory.
“Wood has veins and scars that speak of the passage of time, of collective and individual memory and identity. Carving, engraving or assembling wood is not just a creative act: it is a dialogue with the past and a way of leaving a mark on the present,” explains the Museum team.
The day offers a diverse program with specialized workshops in wood carving, wood engraving, marquetry and arte povera , as well as family activities such as wooden games, a pencil pot workshop and two storytelling sessions. Participants will also be able to enjoy an inaugural conference on wood and art with sculptor Nico Nubiola; guided tours by Elisenda H. Caamaño, carpenter and artist, and Pep Paret, head of the specialty of painting and sculpture on wood at the Center for the Restoration of Movable Property of Catalonia; a collaborative workshop to create a community piece and a baton dancing workshop, which connects wood with popular traditions. Throughout the day, bar service and a musical break with a concert at noon will be offered.
The activities will take place in the rooms and spaces of the Museum, creating a dialogue between the works of the permanent collection and the creations of the participants.
Wood has been, and continues to be, one of the most widely used materials in the world of art, whether as a support or as an artistic material. The Girona Art Museum preserves several pieces of wood of great interest, such as the Biga de Cruïlles (12th century), the altarpiece of Sant Miquel by Lluís Borrassà (1416); a wooden capital from the church of Sant Cristòfol de Beget (12th – 13th centuries), the only one preserved of this material; or the sculptures by Pere Robredo that decorated the altarpiece of the basilica of Sant Feliu de Girona (1507 – 1510), among many others.
