Awaken a work of art: stop-motion workshop

Taller d'stop motion al museu

Presentation

The Girona Art Museum preserves a unique work of art: the Biga de Cruïlles. It is a fascinating work from the 13th century, where a succession of characters in procession is painted, with their mouths open as if they were singing. But: what if we could animate it, make the characters move freely along the beam and build an original and fun story? In this stop-motion workshop you will learn a lot about medieval art, using your mobile phone to create a video story that you will surely never forget.

Objectives

  • Encourage active student participation and creativity to build an original story as a team.
  • Deepen the analysis of a single work from the Museum through a slow and reflective look.
  • Apply mobile technology to artistic and creative projects.

Description

The activity “Awaken a work of art: stop-motion workshop” encourages students in 1st and 2nd ESO to come up with stories together, using creativity and teamwork skills. The workshop promotes participation to obtain an active role in learning. This activity allows the creation of personal stories inspired by the works in the collection. Participants share their own stories and experiences with the rest of the group and at the same time with the Museum.
The approach of this activity consists of first working on the practical workshop without information about the work and then seeing the original work. The introduction of the activity is articulated through the total participation of the students through open questions about the Middle Ages. Subsequently, the workshop begins, which takes up almost the entire time of the activity. At this time, and with small working groups, the students think about their story using the characters of the Biga de Cruïlles from the 12th century. Then, with their mobile phone and a tripod, they prepare to create the stop-motion through many photographs of small movements of the characters. Finally, once the stop-motion of each group has been created, all the videos are sent to the educator. In the final part of the experience, the work is visited and the students can see up close what the Biga de Cruïlles that they have worked on in the workshop is like, when they did not yet know it. At this time, and after having given the pertinent explanation about the work, the educator will show the stop-motion on a touch tablet and the groups will comment on their videos to the rest of their classmates.

This activity allows participants to create personal stories inspired by the works in the collection. Participants share their own stories and experiences with the rest of the group and at the same time with the Museum.
