The Girona Art Museum presents the most complete study on The Lioness of Girona

The Girona Art Museum presents the publication “The Lioness of Girona. New approaches from the history of art”, the most complete study carried out to date on this iconic Girona sculpture, a column with the sculpture of a lion clawed at the top of the shaft.
This pioneering research, promoted by the Girona Art Museum, provides unpublished data and comprehensively approaches the analysis of this emblematic work. The research has been carried out by art historian Miquel Àngel Fumanal, who also signs the publication.
The original sculpture of the Lioness is preserved and exhibited at the Girona Art Museum, a fact unknown to many Girona residents and visitors. Carme Clusellas, director of the Girona Art Museum, states: “This publication not only sheds light on one of Girona’s most beloved symbols, but also vindicates the museum’s role as custodian of the city’s cultural heritage.”
The publication includes a descriptive introduction, a detailed historical study, a physical and stylistic analysis of the sculpture, and a final section with conclusions and bibliography. This comprehensive work not only delves into the recent history of the sculpture, but also brings to light previously unpublished data on its vicissitudes over time. The study also proposes a new chronology for the sculpture, placing it at the end of the 13th century, based on scientific, physical, and stylistic analyses.
The book presentation will take place on Saturday, October 26 at 12:00, and will be led by Joan Boadas, a city chronicler, and will be attended by the author. Previously, at 11:00, a brief guided tour will be offered that will begin in Plaça de Sant Feliu, right at the foot of the public sculpture of La Lleona. In order to participate in the tour, reservations are required in advance on the website.
Miquel Àngel Fumanal, author of the study, writes: “Despite the questions that still remain, the in-depth study of “the Lioness” has provided relevant data that allow us to review the knowledge we had so far about this sculptural piece.”
