The Girona Art Museum successfully closes the Roser Bru exhibition, which has attracted more than 9,000 visitors
The Girona Art Museum celebrates the good reception of the exhibition «Roser Bru. Overcoming Distance », which has exceeded 9,000 visitors in four months. The exhibition, which opened on November 23, 2024 and closed last Sunday, March 30, has consolidated the Catalan-Chilean artist in Catalonia.
Roser Bru, born in Barcelona and exiled to Chile in 1939, is one of the most recognized artists of the 20th century, especially in Latin America. The exhibition, curated by Àlex Mitrani and Inés Ortega-Márquez, highlighted the exceptional nature of her work, marked by a great social commitment, as well as the links with her native Catalonia. The show brought together more than a hundred works, most of which came from Chile, but also from Catalan museums and private collections.
Since its inauguration, more than 81% of people who have visited the Museum have done so attracted by this exhibition, which recovered the figure of the artist after 20 years since the last exhibition in Barcelona.
In addition, the md’A has organized around twenty parallel activities around the exhibition, with the participation of 921 people, consolidating the proposal as one of the major cultural events of the year. The The exhibition catalogue , of which 185 copies have been sold, has been a key tool for understanding the depth of Bru’s work, his relationship with Catalonia, his commitment to women, democracy and culture and, of course, his artistic legacy which is universal today.
As highlighted by Carme Clusellas, director of the Girona Art Museum, “one of the objectives of this exhibition was to recover the figure of Roser Bru, rather than presenting an anthology. Her work is relevant enough to continue exploring in more depth the aspects that have only been outlined in this exhibition. We hope that this will be the spearhead so that she is not forgotten again and to promote new exhibition projects in the future.”
The exhibition has been complemented by the collective show «One of a kind is nothing. A visual tribute to Roser Bru » , curated by artist Paula Bonet, which delves into Roser Bru’s creative heritage through the eyes of young creators, students of the La madriguera workshop , and which can be visited until April 6.
«Roser Bru. Overcoming Distance » follows the exhibition line of the Museu d’Art de Girona to disseminate the work of relevant women artists from the Catalan creative scene, as it already did with the exhibitions «Flashes of an instant. The contribution of women artists to the Art Collection of the newspaper Avui » (2023-2025), «Ferresa of silence. The artists of Feminal magazine » (2022-2023), «From Paris to Girona. Mela Muter and Polish Artists in Catalonia » (2018-2019) or « Olga Sacharoff: painting, poetry, emancipation » (2017-2018).
On the other hand, the md’A is already preparing to inaugurate two new exhibitions: «Masters of Catalan art of the 20th century. Bassat Collection » , curated by Joan Gil Gregorio and Conxita Oliver, which will open its doors on May 9 with 67 pieces by 63 renowned artists; and « Sentir / Expressar » , curated by Fina Duran and Mercè Pomer, which opens on June 7 with works by Ricard Aymar, Francesca Riu, Tura Sanglas and Jordi Tolosa, and which will subsequently tour the Cerdanyola Art Museum, the Palau Foundation and Can Manyé.
